Born in Dayton, Ohio
1979
Made my first pinch pot in elementary school and glazed it bright orange.
1987
My family moved to Tangier, Morocco where I was exposed to many different local crafts that embraced pattern, color and texture.
1989
Attended boarding school at TASIS in England and took my first drawing class with John Smalley and art history class with Karl Christiansen. Their teachings instilled a love for classical art and its qualities of light, shadow, proportion and geometry.
1991
Graduated from TASIS England and returned to the United States to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute to study Architecture.
1994
I took my first ceramic class at Virginia Tech under Ellen Braaten’s instruction. I had a very unsuccessful first semester trying to make bowls out of one too many slabs. Ellen was surprised when I came back for a second semester.
1996
Discovered the beauty of the coil pot and this is where it all begins.
1997
I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors Degree in Architecture.
1998
I was invited to Gallifa, Spain by Ellen Braaten for a one month ceramic study program at the Josep Llorens Artigas Foundation. After this trip I knew I wanted to spend my days working in clay. It will take seven more years for that dream to be realized.
1999
My sister Grissell decided to move to New York to pursue dance and asked if I wanted to join her. How could I say no?
2001
As I was walking back to my apartment in Brooklyn I saw a flyer for the Sunset Park Ceramic Co-op. For the first time since college I had a studio that had more than just a shelf and small table.
2002
I started selling work and taking commissions from friends and family.
2003
I married my wonderfully artistic husband Gabriel Pons.
2004
Scarlettwares.com was launched with the creative hand of Susan Frantz of Emergent Design Ideas.
2005
After seven inspiring years in New York, my husband and I decided to quit our day jobs and pursue our art. I was three months pregnant at the time we packed up our apartment along with our two cats, Mr. Marty Mouse and Dr. Reginald Trots MD and headed south to Fredericksburg, Virginia.
November of that year we landed our first space together at LibertyTown Arts Workshop. Our studio, gallery and retail space the PONSHOP was officially open. On December 10th, Diego Suhy Pons arrived.
2006
We celebrated our first year in Virginia and are looking forward to an exciting second year full of fantastic projects.
