1973
Born in Dayton, Ohio
1979
Made my first pinch pot in elementary school and glazed it
bright orange.
1987
My family moved to Tangier, Morocco where I was exposed to
many different local crafts that embraced pattern, color and
texture.
1989
Attended boarding school at TASIS in England and took my
first drawing class with John Smalley and art history class
with Karl Christiansen. Their teachings instilled a love for
classical art and its qualities of light, shadow, proportion
and geometry.
1991
Graduated from TASIS England and returned to the United
States to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute to study
Architecture.
1994
I took my first ceramic class at Virginia Tech under Ellen
Braaten’s instruction. I had a very unsuccessful first
semester trying to make bowls out of one too many slabs.
Ellen was surprised when I came back for a second semester.
1996
Discovered the beauty of the coil pot and this is where it
all begins.
1997
I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors Degree in
Architecture.
1998
I was invited to Gallifa, Spain by Ellen Braaten for a one
month ceramic study program at the Josep Llorens Artigas
Foundation. After this trip I knew I wanted to spend my days
working in clay. It will take seven more years for that
dream to be realized.
1999
My sister Grissell decided to move to New York to pursue
dance and asked if I wanted to join her. How could I say no?
2001
As I was walking back to my apartment in Brooklyn I saw a
flyer for the Sunset Park Ceramic Co-op. For the first time
since college I had a studio that had more than just a shelf
and small table.
2002
I started selling work and taking commissions from friends
and family.
2003
I married my wonderfully artistic husband Gabriel Pons.
2004
Scarlettwares.com was launched with the creative hand of
Susan Frantz of
Emergent Design Ideas.
2005
After seven inspiring years in New York, my husband and I
decided to quit our day jobs and pursue our art. I was three
months pregnant at the time we packed up our apartment along
with our two cats, Mr. Marty Mouse and Dr. Reginald Trots MD
and headed south to Fredericksburg, Virginia.
November of that year we
landed our first space together at LibertyTown Arts
Workshop. Our studio, gallery and retail space the
PONSHOP
was officially open. On December 10th, Diego Suhy Pons
arrived.
2006
We celebrated our first year in Virginia and are looking
forward to an exciting second year full of fantastic
projects.
